The idea was born out of a party experiment from Stephen Hawking. On June 28, 2009, he threw a party for time travelers, but didn’t send out the invitations until the next day. If people had shown up, he hypothesized, it would be proof that time travel is real. However, no one showed up.

“Copies of it will survive in one form or another for many thousands of years. Maybe one day, someone living in the future will find the information and use a wormhole time machine to come back to my party, proving that time travel will, one day, be possible.”
